What is Reiki?

This is a question I get asked quite a lot. Reiki, it seems, is one of those things that many people have heard of but don’t really know what it is. So let me explain:

Reiki is simply the ancient art of healing by touch. It is thought to have originated as a Tibetan Buddhist practice that initially concentrated on Spiritual Enlightenment but is now widely used to treat many ailments and complaints.

Pronounced RAY KEY, the word is derived from two separate Japanese words:

REI – meaning Universal and KI – meaning Life Force

So, Reiki is a universal life force that gently but powerfully promotes balance in the body by providing extra energy which automatically goes to any blockages present allowing the life force to flow freely again. As Reiki is given, the body draws the energy it wants through the healer, then directs it straight to the area it is most needed. In this way it goes direct to the root of any problems whether physical, mental or emotional, so supporting the body’s natural healing process.

Because it is a universal force that knows no bounds, Reiki can be sent anywhere, to anyone or anything. Distance healing is just as effective as being with the therapist in person and can be a convenient way to receive the healing benefits of Reiki without having to interrupt your routine too much or even having to leave your own home. Reiki can even be received while you are asleep. For this reason distance reiki is especially beneficial for babies, young children, the elderly or infirm.

Reiki can work alongside both conventional and alternative medicine and is not just for times of illness. Used regularly, Reiki can help anyone to heal their life and live it to the highest level, restoring control and balance.

Babies in particular benefit greatly from Reiki as they are very open to the energies – they don’t yet have our preconceived ideas – and I will discuss this more in future posts.

So, that is Reiki – simply a gentle form of healing for everyone.
